Frontier Workers permit under new rules for Brexit

The Frontier Workers Permit is to confirm the status of those exercising their rights as frontier workers on or before the end of the Brexit transition period on 31 December 2020, and who wish to continue to do so after 31 December 2020.

What is the last date for applying for the Frontier Workers Permit:

  • The application should be filed latest by 30 June 2021. The application can be filed earliest on 10 December 2020.

Do I need to be in the UK to apply for the Frontier Workers Permit?

No, you don't need to be in the UK to apply, you can be either inside or outside the UK.

Which countries Citizens are eligible to apply for the Frontier Workers Permit?

To apply, you should be a citizen of either an EU country or EEA country or a Switzerland (Irish citizens are not required to apply but they may apply if they wish to)

What is the eligibility requirement for the Frontier Workers Permit?

You should either be employed or self employed in the UK, but you should be living outside the UK while you are employed or self employed in the UK

or 

You can also keep your frontier worker status if you were previously either employed or self employed in the UK and were living outside the UK at that time and you meet one of the following requirements:

  • you are temporarily unable to work because of any illness and/or accident

  • you are now involuntarily unemployed and you are actively looking for work, for example you have been made redundant by your previous employer, etc.

  • you are in vocational training and involuntarily unemployed

  • you are in vocational training while you are unemployed and the vocational training you are undertaking is related to your previous work as employed or self employed in the UK

  • you are unable to work due to pregnancy or childbirth

  • you are on maternity or paternity leave and you will return to being employed or self employed in the UK at the end of the maternity or paternity leave period

What are the consequences of not applying for the Frontier Workers Permit?

In order to enter the UK on or after 1 July 2021, you will need to hold a valid Frontier Workers Permit to enter the UK as a Frontier Worker or else you would not be able to enter the UK as a Frontier Worker
